Custom data input

Post by sbotnick »

Hello,

I believe I now understand what is offered for custom data inputs and I don't believe that I am overlooking any steps.

User experience: When creating a device with a template that includes creating a data source with Custom Data, you are not prompted to enter the Custom Data as the device is created from template. It does, however populate the data source with the Custom Data from the data source template if it has any. Subsequently, if the default was supplied or the field was blank, you have to edit the data source after it is created.

Expectation: When creating a device that has Custom Data, the user should be prompted to either verify the fields if the template has supplied Custom Data defaults or supply Custom Data as the device is created with its datasource.

IIRC, if you go to add a graph to an existing device, you will be presented with the Custom Data fields as a step on graph creation.

It's been a while, I mostly abandoned using custom data sources that are not SNMP because the original complaint/request is apparently still valid and I have at least one other issue when using custom data in sources that are not SNMP and it is a show-stopper, I have posted on that one also- additional DSs added when graphs are added later to a device using scripted data source. I'm still on 1.2.19 and haven't checked the changelog to see of there may have been fixes.

The original in a nutshell as I remember it: when there is custom data in a DS template and you have it set to ask for user override on data source creation, it does not ask when the device, data source and graphs are created, you have to go back into the DS and edit the custom field to change it from whatever the default set in the DS template is.

Yea, even the automation can not read your mind. If you create the graphs manually, it'll ask though. If you are able to pull the values from a database or something like that, it's best to use the CLI scripts for automation.
